Mr Alex Watterson, MRes

Advanced Research Assistant

Alumni

This person is a member of Sanger Institute Alumni.

I have left the institute after approximately two and three-quarter years, working in the Garnett and Coelho groups. I am leaving to pursue a PhD in Immunology at the Babraham Institute in Martin Turner’s group.

Alex was an Advanced Research Assistant in the Garnett & Coelho groups. He worked on genomic screens to identify strategies to understand molecular pathways involved in sensitivity to cancer immunotherapies, and identified two novel targets/biomarkers that could improve treatment success.

Alex Watterson

Whilw workign in the Garnett and Coelho groups, Alex worked to identify potential sensitisers and/or biomarkers for enhancing immunotherapy response, specifically in the context of IFNg. Using whole genome CRISPR screening, Alex reported that the loss of two tumour suppressors could sensitise multiple cell lines to IFNg-induced killing, validating this in cell line, autologous co-culture, and in vivo models of cancer immunity.

While working ewith Dr Coelho, Alex also employed a variety of genomic screening techniques, such as base and prime editing, helping to identify multiple resistance mutations to small molecule therapies.

in September 2024, Alex left the Wellcome Sanger Institute to pursue a PhD in Immunology at the Babraham Institute and hopes to continue using genomics to improve cancer immunotherapy.
