Dr Mona Suleiman

Postdoctoral Fellow

Mona is a molecular biologist specialising in the study of anthelmintic drug resistance and the development of diagnostic tools for parasitic helminths. Her research focuses on using cutting-edge genomic and transcriptomic approaches to address critical challenges in parasitology.

Mona’s work involves using experimental evolution models to uncover the mechanisms behind drug resistance in Strongyloides and identify signs of drug selection in communities undergoing mass drug administration. Additionally, Mona is advancing molecular barcoding techniques to develop a high-throughput sequencing assay for human-infective helminths, which will enable more accurate diagnostics in resource-limited settings.

Before joining the Wellcome Sanger Institute, Mona completed her PhD at the University of Bath. During her PhD, she investigated the nematode Strongyloides using a rat model to explore the role of small RNAs (sRNAs) in parasitism. She identified specific sRNAs that are up-regulated during the parasitic stage, offering insights into their potential roles in the parasitic life cycle.
