Zain Iqbal

Digital Learning and Content Specialist

I lead communications strategy at the BioDev network, supporting engagement across our communities, highlighting developers and promoting inclusion through initiatives that broaden access to science and technology. My background includes research on informal science learning and public engagement through science centres and education-focused projects funded by Wellcome and NSF.

My work focuses on building inclusive communities in genomics by creating accessible content, delivering hands-on workshops, and sharing the stories behind the science. I’m especially passionate about supporting underrepresented groups in STEM, and have co-developed coding workshops aimed at encouraging young women to explore scientific careers.

Before joining Sanger, I presented science shows across the UK with The Royal Institution, delivering live demos in schools and leading training on inclusive science communication. I’ve also worked in museums, classrooms, planetariums and VR domes—always looking for creative ways to make science feel exciting, relevant, and open to all.

At the core of my work is a commitment to sharing science beyond the lab—whether through open resources, collaborative projects or new platforms for engagement. I’m particularly interested in how open science can increase equity and participation across the globe.

In the future, I hope to expand my work at the intersection of science, education and community, building partnerships that make research more inclusive and inspiring new generations of scientists.
