Dr Javier Gandasegui

Staff Scientist

Javier Gadasegui is a molecular biologist and epidemiologist specialising in neglected helminthiasis. His research primarily focuses on utilising genetic data to understand the transmission dynamics of interstitial parasites and their responses to anthelmintic treatments, aiming to improving control strategies of these diseases.

Javier obtained a MSc and PhD degree in Global Health and Development by the University of Salamanca. During his PhD, Javier gained a strong background in DNA detections-based diagnosis of schistosomiasis. Besides, he designed, evaluated and validated these methods in animal models and through field studies in endemic countries. He also carried out international research stays in Angola, Brazil and Mozambique. Besides, he obtained several scientific and academic awards, highlighting the extraordinary PhD award of the University of Salamanca or the International Mention of his PhD.

Afterwards, he obtained recognized postdoctoral fellowships in competitive calls: the Fundación Ramón Areces International Fellowships during which Javier developed his research in Mozambique during two years; the Juan de la Cierva Fellowship, in the Spanish Research Council (CSIC); and a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Barcelona Institute of Global Health under the Severo Ochoa Excellence Programme, to investigate the role of microbiome in treatment response in neglected tropical infections. Also, Javier has been focused on the study of soil-transmitted helminth infections and the emergence of anthelmintic resistance.
