Jon leads the communications efforts of the Genomic Surveillance Unit. He writes and edits updates for social media, websites, and newsletters, and works to better connect the community of researchers, policymakers, and public health practitioners that use genomic data to make decisions about infectious diseases.

An experienced science communicator, Jon creates accurate, compelling content that tells the story of the science being done in the GSU. He uses a variety of formats, including blogs, interviews, articles, videos, media pitches, and social media posts. Working closely with staff across the GSU as well as collaborators around the world, he brings the latest cutting edge science together with the human story of genomic surveillance.

Jon holds a master’s degree in Science Communication and Public Engagement from the University of Edinburgh and an interdisciplinary undergraduate from McMaster University in Canada. He started at Sanger in 2022 as the Communications Officer for MalariaGEN, and was previously the Communications Manager for ScienceUpFirst, a social media campaign that fights misinformation around COVID-19 on social media.
