Nicole Soranzo named among Italy’s Top 38 Women Scientists in biomedicine
Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute Faculty member, Professor Nicole Soranzo has been named by the Italian National Observatory on Women’s Health, as an inaugural member of its “Top Italian Women Scientists” club. The award brings together 38 leading female researchers working in Italy and abroad, and whose high-quality research over time have made substantial contributions to advancing scientific knowledge in the biomedical field.
Professor Soranzo studies how the human genome influences the risk of common diseases, in particular with an emphasis on cardiometabolic disorders. Her research team, based at the Sanger Institute and the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine, employs cutting-edge genomic analysis with deep clinical phenotyping to unpick the genetic and epigenetic causes of many common human diseases.
“I am delighted to be recognised by the National Observatory as one of their first Top Italian Women Scientists. However, this award is not mine alone, but honours the dedicated and innovative work of my team and the groups we collaborate with. This award is important because it promotes the value of female scientists and I encourage all young women considering a career in science to go for it. Nothing beats making a discovery that advances our understanding of how life works.”

Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is one of the world’s leading genome centres. Through its ability to conduct research at scale, it is able to engage in bold and long-term exploratory projects that are designed to influence and empower medical science globally. Institute research findings, generated through its own research programmes and through its leading role in international consortia, are being used to develop new diagnostics and treatments for human disease.
The Wellcome Trust
The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation dedicated to improving health. We support bright minds in science, the humanities and the social sciences, as well as education, public engagement and the application of research to medicine. Our investment portfolio gives us the independence to support such transformative work as the sequencing and understanding of the human genome, research that established front-line drugs for malaria, and Wellcome Collection, our free venue for the incurably curious that explores medicine, life and art.
