Dr Magnus Manske
Principal Software Developer
I am a principal software developer in the Parasites and Microbes (PaM) Informatics team, and manager of the UI (User Interface) team. I help to make bioinformatics data and software available to both Sanger and external collaborators. I am interested in making data and functionality available for others, so they can achieve their research goals.
Current projects
Monocle/Bridge
As part of the Monocle/Bridge team, I work on a bespoke web interface/back-end that allows scientists to investigate large sample collections and their properties.
STS
As part of the STS team, I develop the STS sample tracking system, used across several research groups at Sanger.
About me
I am a biochemist, bioinformatician, and software developer. I am curious about science, technology, and free knowledge.
In my spare time, I try to further free access to knowledge. I am the original author of MediaWiki, the software that powers Wikipedia, and I am still invoved in both editorial and technical aspects of Wikipedia and Wikidata.
My background
I studied biochemistry at the University of Cologne, graduation with a PhD in 2006. In 2007 I joined the Wellcome Sanger Institute to work on Malaria under Dominic Kwiatkowski. In 2019 I joined the Parasites and Microbes project.
