Catherine McCarthy

Compliance Manager

Alumni

This person is a member of Sanger Institute Alumni.

I moved on from the Wellcome Sanger Institute in August of 2023. Over my 10 years at the Institute I transitioned from a research focus to one that enabled me to build expertise, locally implement and support the Institute in an impactful area of legislation governing the use of non-human materials in research – Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS).

The Research Goverance (RG) team as part of the Legal and Governance team are responsible for advising members of Sanger Institute staff about compliance with applicable laws and regulations associated with the use of materials in research, including but not exclusively the Human Tissue Act, Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act, the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) and associated Institute policies. We help achieve compliance through the initiation, administration and development and monitoring of internal processes, and communicate regulatory and policy requirements using a variety of means, including team talks, induction and training sessions, face-to-face meetings and documentation.

Across my four years in this area at the Wellcome Sanger Institute I worked on the legal and ethical acquisition of non-human materials as part of their use in Institute research. This was heavily focussed on compliance with Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) legislation as part of our global collaborations, at scale.

Leading the training, development, implementation and legal support of this area, we have built knowledge on and addressed the approaches to ABS by over 170 countries as part of this work to date.
