    The Sanger Institute played a major role in the genomic surveillance of the COVID-19 pandemic, providing large-scale high-throughput sequencing of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and analysis of its evolution and spread in the UK.
  - Sanger Seminar Series
    Throughout the COVID-19 lockdown of 2020-2021 we hosted a series of monthly freely available and open virtual seminars. From using genomic approaches to map all cell types in the human body, understand how cancer develops, and track the evolution and spread of global diseases, our senior scientists and faculty presented the latest developments in their field.

This person is a member of Sanger Institute Alumni.

Luke left the Sanger Institute after three years of service in the Tree of Life Programme and Genomic Surveillance Unit. He is pursuing further opportunities in science communications from Queensland, Australia.

Luke served as Communications Specialist at the Genomic Surveillance Unit (GSU) from 2023-4, and before that as the Communications Officer for the Tree of Life Programme from 2021-3.

Luke has a master’s degree in investigative journalism, and a background in political and environmental campaign communications. He has no formal qualifications in science, but does have a passion for sharing stories and helping explain the technologies that are changing our world.

Joining the Wellcome Sanger Institute in 2021 as Communications Officer for the Tree of Life Programme, Luke moved into the role of Communications Specialist in the Genomic Surveillance Unit in 2023.
