Dr Laure Gambardella

Senior Staff Scientist

 
I supervise the Cambridge wet part of the Haniffa Lab. We run validations and hypothesis-driven experiments suggested by the data we obtained from human single cell genomics. We are particularly interested in the role played by the immune cells during skin organogenesis and diseases. 

I use my expertise in skin, stem cell and developmental biology to supervise projects using human pluripotent stem cells to generate skin organoid models. I have a special interest for lineage differentiation and cell heterogeneity. My favourite skills are human pluripotent stem cell differentiation and imaging. I enjoy supervising research assistants and helping young scientists to develop.

Before joining the team of Prof. Muzz Haniffa, I worked for 7 years in the group of Dr Sanjay Sinha developing a team working on human pluripotent stem cell-derived epicardium and its potential in cardiac regeneration. My interest for epicardial cell heterogeneity added the single cell genomics to my passion for stem cells. I acquired experience in various cell types during several post-doctoral experiences in the UK, France and Switzerland, working on the development and function of neutrophils, endothelial cells and B cells at the Babraham Institute, keratinocyte stem cells in Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne and Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris and haematopoietic stem cells in the Department of Haematology of the University of Cambridge. My passion for stem cells and skin homeostasis came from my PhD obtained in the laboratory of Dr Yann Barrandon in Paris for studying transcription factors in epidermis and hair follicle stem cells.
