Dr. Chapman heads up a small team providing a broad range of advice to partners and colleagues that ensures that the Tree of Life programme is compliant with various national, european and international wildlife and environmental laws. Her work includes creating novel  frameworks and processes customised for the programme's needs. She is also a member of Sanger’s Biodiversity Strategy Steering Group.

Nikki has a PhD in the ecology and biodiversity of rare cold water marine reefs, an understanding of which is critical in underpinning their longterm protection. Whilst working as a government adviser she headed up UK’s review of the marine biodiversity action plans, supported the designation of marine protected areas and managed marine and terrestrial projects based in the UK’s Overseas Territories. She was head-hunted to create and lead St. Helena Island’s first nature conservation department and implemented St. Helena’s first marine protected area. Subsequently she led a diverse range of programmes and ran a small NGO in Tanzania and Mauritius respectively. More recently Nikki returned to the UK and headed up sustainable fisheries (UK and international), and sustainable forestry and the prevention of illegal wildlife trade programmes (Liberia and Guinea).
