Sanger Institute opens up its life sciences leadership development courses
The Wellcome Sanger Institute is empowering the next generation of life science research leaders by opening up its bespoke leadership courses to the research community. Honed by years of experience of leading and delivering major worldwide collaborations and running Europe’s largest high-throughput DNA sequencing and analysis pipelines, Sanger is uniquely placed to deliver training tailored to the needs of the genomic and biological community.
Sanger’s Scientific Education and Excellence Development (SEED) Scheme offers five leadership development programmes to enable leaders across the life sciences industry to take their leadership skills to the next level. Through interactive training sessions, feedback and personality profiling, participants will have the opportunity to build meaningful networks, share best practice ideas and develop behaviours that will drive their own success and that of their teams.
“We developed our leadership courses to meet the needs of the Sanger Institute to help it continue to lead the world in delivering cutting-edge science at scale. Sanger’s unique experience of coordinating and motivating diverse groups of scientists in the Institute and across global research networks means that the courses we have created are ideally suited to the needs of the life sciences community.”
Julia Wilson Associate Director of the Wellcome Sanger Institute
The SEED programmes cater to the specific needs of research leaders at very different stages of their career, from newly promoted supervisors and managers, through to more established managers seeking to enhance their management and leadership skills. The five courses are:
- Stepping into Management for Supervisors
- Stepping into Management for Managers
- Aspiring Leaders in Science
- Management in Action
- Talented Women’s Impact Programme
All programmes focus on supporting the learners to effectively transfer their learning back to the workplace through 1:1 coaching, the interactive nature of the programme and skills-based practice. 360 Feedback and Personality Psychometrics are also available as part of the programme or as standalone opportunities.
“Success in modern life sciences research is no longer reliant on research skills alone. Successful research leaders need effective communication skills to develop high-performing teams and networks that deliver. Many gain management positions due to technical expertise and learn the management skills as they go. Our leadership courses are tailored to the unique challenges and opportunities encountered in the life sciences. We are delighted that our courses will help to build the next generation of modern research leaders.”
