3 Institute for Systems Biology 3.11
4 Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory 3.09
Institutions ranked by impact per publication.
The SCImago 2009 World Report ranks the Sanger Institute first. The average impact of the Sanger Institute’s publications is 232% higher than the world average.

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute has topped two rankings and is joint second in another measuring the publication impact of more than 2100 research organisations across the globe. The results include top worldwide research institutions and organisations representing more than 80 countries worldwide.

The findings, published in the 2009 SCImago World Report, cover research institutions including those from government, higher education, health and corporate sectors. The rankings measure five indicators of institution research performance, including publication output, collaboration and impact.

The Sanger Institute topped the ranking which measures the impact per publication produced and that which measures citations per publication.

“We are absolutely thrilled to top the rankings for these important indicators. This is not only a tribute to the excellent work of our scientists and project leaders, but it is also a reflection of the achievements of everyone who works at the Institute – contributing to, supporting and enabling our scientific achievements.

“As the vast potential of genomic research continues to unfold in front of us, we endeavour to continue to make unique contributions at the forefront of the field.”

Professor Allan Bradley Director of the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute

The citation ranking scores average scientific impact of an institution’s publication output in terms of citations per documents. The Institute ranked first by this measure.

The impact ranking is calculated by awarding research institutions a ‘normalised citation of produced science’ ranking, which reveals the ratio between the average scientific impact of an institution and the world average impact of publications during the same time frame and in the same subject area.

The Sanger Institute was awarded a ratio of 3.32, which equates to an average publication impact that is 232 per cent higher than the global average.

As well as these two top places, the Institute was joint second in the survey’s measure of the importance of the journals in which research was published.

In addition, the Sanger Institute was in the top 3 per cent on the survey’s measure of international collaboration – the institution’s output ratio that has been produced in collaboration with foreign institutions. Collaboration is a cornerstone of the Institute’s research.

Since its inception in 1993, the Sanger Institute has been involved in some of the most important biological and biomedical research collaborations, including the Human Genome Project, the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium and the 1000 Genomes Project. Over the years, the Institute has published groundbreaking research in human and disease genetics, cancer research and parasite infection as well as producing software and resources for biologists worldwide.

The SCImago is a Spanish research group; the figures for its 2009 World Report are based on publication and citation data from Elsevier’s SCOPUS database.

The SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) project is a Research Evaluation Platform and Ranking Generator to analyze research outputs of universities and research-focused institutions. The SIR platform aims at designing analytical tools to help institutions monitor and assess their research outcomes and make decisions to improve their research performance and funding opportunities.

  • The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, which receives the majority of its funding from the Wellcome Trust, was founded in 1992. The Institute is responsible for the completion of the sequence of approximately one-third of the human genome as well as genomes of model organisms and more than 90 pathogen genomes. In October 2006, new funding was awarded by the Wellcome Trust to exploit the wealth of genome data now available to answer important questions about health and disease.

  • The Wellcome Trust

The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation dedicated to achieving extraordinary improvements in human and animal health. We support the brightest minds in biomedical research and the medical humanities. Our breadth of support includes public engagement, education and the application of research to improve health. We are independent of both political and commercial interests.
